About Harbin Electric
Harbin Electric, headquartered in Harbin, China, is a leading developer and manufacturer of a wide array of electric motors with a focus on innovative, customized and value-added products. Its major product lines include linear motors, automobile specialty micro-motors, and industrial rotary motors. The Company's products are purchased by a broad range of domestic and international customers, including those involved in the energy industry, factory automation, food processing, packaging, transportation, automobile, medical devices, machinery and tool manufacturing, chemical, petrochemical, as well as in the metallurgical and mining industries.
Harbin Electric has built a strong research and development capability by recruiting talent worldwide and through collaborations with top scientific institutions. The Company owns numerous patents in China and has developed award-winning products for its customers. Through its U.S. and China-based subsidiaries, the Company operates four manufacturing facilities in China located in Xi’an, Weihai, Harbin, and Shanghai.
As China continues to grow its industrial base, Harbin Electric aspires to be a pioneer in leading the industrialization and technological transformation of the Chinese manufacturing sector.
The company operates four manufacturing facilities.
Harbin
Our Harbin facility is located in the government-designated Development Zone in the city of Harbin. It occupies approximately 50,000 square meters of land with state-of-the-art production equipment primarily dedicated to linear motor products. The facility also features a basketball court where the company chairman can sometimes be seen playing basketball with factory workers.
A linear motor operates on the same physical principles as a traditional motor, but the stator, or non-moving component, is flat, rather than cylindrical, producing linear, rather than rotational, force. We sell our linear motors to a broad range of customers in China and in the United States, including customers in the energy industry, factory automation, food processing, packaging industries and mass transportation systems. In most cases, we are the only supplier of linear motors to our clients.
We are the first and only Chinese firm to receive a government contract for developing a linear motor propulsion system for metro transit trains and the only Chinese firm making linear motors for blue chip American companies. The Chinese government has made the development of metropolitan public transportation infrastructure a priority for the next fifteen years. According to the most recent report, China has approved plans to build subways in 22 cities for a total investment of RMB 882 billion (~US$129 billion). Eleven cities in China currently have subways covering a total of 835.5 km. In the next five years, China will have another 89 subways totaling 2,500 km for an investment of RMB 993 billion (~US$145 billion). China has more than 40 cities with populations of over one million which are also potential sites for urban mass transit system investment.
Shanghai
Our newly constructed Shanghai facility is located in the Shanghai Zhuqiao Airport Industrial Zone, occupying 40,800 square meters of land. This new facility began production in March 2009 and is dedicated to automobile specialty micro-motor products. The designed capacity is 10 million units, with potential to expand the capacity to 20 million units.
Automobile specialty micro-motors are used for various automation functions in an automobile, such as raising and lowering windows, moving seats backwards and forwards, closing trunks etc. Our automobile specialty micro-motors are purchased by customers who are first-tier suppliers to the automobile industry. We supply these products to domestic customers and also export them to OEM suppliers in North America.
Auto electric motors are very difficult to make because of temperature differences between places like Palm Springs and Anchorage, the humidity of New Orleans and the dry heat of Phoenix. They must also be very quiet, with low vibrations, and able withstand accidents and shocks. These motors must satisfy various technical parameters in order to function under different operating conditions, therefore, require very sophisticated engineer technologies in the fields of material, electronic, and electromagnetic engineering
Weihai
We acquired our Weihai facility in 2008 and as a result are now the most diversified motor company in China. The factory has been producing motors for 32 years. It is located in the coastal city of Weihai, Shandong Province, and occupies approximately 150,000 square meters of land. It has about 3,000 sales representatives across China and its products enjoy a good reputation. It’s registered trademark, “Wenbao,” was named by the State Administration for Industry & Commerce as one of the “Chinese Most Well-known Trademarks” in 2007.
The Weihai factory manufactures industrial motors for use in the chemical, petrochemical, mining, textile, agricultural, machinery and tools, and transportation industries, as well as HVAC systems etc.
More than 75% of the electricity consumed in China is consumed by industrial motors. The Chinese government has plans to introduce regulations in the next two or three years to require these motors to be more productive/efficient. Harbin Electric is developing high efficiency rotary motors that conserve more energy and are environmentally friendly, contributing to a greener and cleaner China.
Xi’an
We acquired Xi’an Simo Motor in 2009. Simo Motor is located in Xi’an City’s Economy and Technology Development Zone, Shaanxi province and occupies 200,000 square meters of land.
Simo was initially established in 1955 as a state-owned company and one of the major backbone companies of China’s electric motor industry. Since then, Simo Motor has become a leading developer and manufacturer of industrial rotary motors that provides solutions for electrical driving systems. In January 2004, Simo Motor was privatized as a shareholding company. It develops and manufactures various industrial motors including some 28 series, over 450 categories and more than 8,000 models of high and low voltage, small, medium, and large-sized motors with output power ranging from 0.35kW to 13,200kW. Its products are widely used in the machine tool, pump, blower, compressor, transportation, agriculture and food industry, steel rolling, power supply, building and construction materials industry, aviation, navigation, hi-tech fields, etc. The Company sells its products primarily in China and also in the advanced industrial markets of North America, Europe and Asia as well as in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
